Joshua Tree Hiking

Desert mines on the mind

March is the perfect Joshua Tree season

There is a small sliver of time between the freezing cool and the blazing sun. Josh, Omid and I headed out for a treefest at the beginning of March in hopes for shenanigans. But what we found was much more sinister. Just kidding. We arrived late Saturday night after a burrito and slept in the desert. The next morning we got up early and found a sweet campsite on the East side of the park. We set off on an epic hike. We found a mine on the map about 7 miles from where we were. There was no trail but it didn’t seemed doable.

On our way to the mine we passed a few abandoned mining camps.

After a few hours of hiking we finally found the mine. It is easy to get disorented in the hills but we were able to see the mine tailings from a distance. The mine had a shaft going straight down and a tunnel that when into the hill and met up with the shaft. If you look closely at the pictures you can see a man at the bottom who is afraid of the sun.

Finally got back to the site about 7 hours later. Pretty exausted but worth it.

Climbed up on the rocks to watch the sun set.

Then the moon rise.

Had a classic Joshua Tree meal of salmon and beans. Josha Tree was the first place we ever made salmon and beans. Never looked back. No regrets.

We got some Easter marshmellows because they were different colors. Then they ended up being gross. Kind of had a lemony flavor. Gross.

The next day we had to be back but we had a few hours to checkout the rocks around our site.

Definetely an awesome trip. Going to have to wait for the summer to cool down until we go again.
